ELÉYÓ, in the Yoruba language literally means "charlatan". The ELÉYÓ rappers come from the streets of Havana, whose language they speak and the various aspects of whose life they describe. Their rap is melodious and lively, it contains that particular Cuban savour which combines the rhythms and tones of Yoruba music, of Son and traditional Rumba with rap and hip hop beats.

In July 1999, they shared the stage with SIN PALABRAS at the Berlin HEIMATKLANGE Festival for 5 days and in the summer of 2001, they participated in the "Couleur Café" and "Klinkende Munt" Festivals in Brussels as well as in the Cine Latino in Zurich.

Joined in February 2001 by Juan Carlos REID ANGARICA "Papito" (one of the best young voices in the Cuban tradition), ELÉYÓ recorded its first CD "Sonando a Cuba" in Habana in March 2001 for the Cuban UNICORNIO label, under the artistic direction of René BAÑOS, leader, composer and arranger of VOCAL SAMPLING.

ELÉYÓ will be on tour in Europe in October and November 2001. They will notably give a showcase on 27 October at the WOMEX in Rotterdam.
