As
an incredibly gifted musician and one of the foremost representatives
of "demotic" Greek music, Petro-Loukas is one of the best
clarinetist of Greece.
Petro-Loukas Chalkias was born in 1934 in Delvinaki, Epirus, as member
of a long lineage of Epirote musicians. His father, Periklis, went to
America before the war and obtained great popularity as a clarinetist.
Petro-Loukas has been playing professionally since he was thirteen.
He stayed several years in America where he won great recognition, for
his extraordinary interpretative skills and virtuosity. In their songs
and instrumental (improvised) music, the ensemble of Petro-Loukas Chalkias
present the long and uncommonly rich musical tradition of their region,
Epirus (Northern Greece). Concerning his activities in Western Europe:
during the last years Petro-Loukas Chalkias has given many concerts
in Holland and Belgium. He has been received with great acclaim by the
public, press and television. The CD 'Miroloi', produced by the VPRO-radio,
one of the main Dutch radio stations turned out to be one of the most
succesful of ethnic music CD's produced by this station.
