DJ Ipek (Turkey / Germany)

D
J Ipek was born in Munich, Bavaria, in 1972, daughter of Turkish migrants. Being bread between oriental and occidental lifestyle moulded her identity. Her passion for music and dance was formed in young age when Indian Musicals were very popular within the Turkish community.

Already as a teenager she participated in different traditional dance and music groups. In 1990 she went to London for a year where she was inspired by the local music and especially jazz scene there. Ipek loves any form of music but at the same time has a very political and social consciousness for the plurality and diversity of ethnic communities as part of societies. In 1997 she graduated in social education in Berlin and is publishing numerous articles about identity and homosexuality since. She has been invited to give a review at many functions and organizes her own parties and events, f.a. Karneval of Cultures in Berlin. Six years ago the german-born turkish DJ IPEK first grasped the opportunity to develop a new course in the house music scene that was being populized by artists like Khaled, Dana International, Tarkan. With her emphasis on house music she demarcates her style from similar attempts in the world/ethno music scene.

Winner of the Siegessäule -gay and lesbian magazine of Berlin- DJ award for the year 2000 DJ IPEK has managed to secure herself a central place in the berliner house-music scene with her explosive innovative fusions. She was the first DJ, who made this burning mix of oriental dancefloor-sounds amalgamated with house and technomusic together with queer classics, which makes an exquisite atmosphere. DJ IPEK, resident DJ at SO36/Berlin is one of the central agents in the emergence and continuation of the cult clubnight "Gayhane-HomOriental-Dancefloor" at the Club SO36, bringing together performances of the genderbending dragqueens, "Salon Oriental", with her sounds. "Gayhane", an event that attracts various sub-cultures from the gay-lesbian as well as the different immigrant communities in Berlin is the penultimate german equivalent to the uk's superhot "attack of asian sounds". DJ IPEK breaks musical and political tabus.
