| Quba
is a pleasant town located in North Azerbaijan on the Kudyal river. On the left
bank live the Muslims, on the right bank the Jewish community, in the neighborhood
of Krasnaya Sloboda. They live in friendly co-existence in this geographically
restricted area ... a situation which seems very utopian compared to what is happening
in other parts of the world!
The musicians of the Gubba Ensemble are natives
of that little town. Some are Muslims, some are Jewish. They play traditional
music of Azerbaijan enriched by traditional popular Jewish influences. Piano,
accordion, local kinds of violin, percussion and oud, and both female and male
voices are assembled in elegant suites, in which the strictly instrumental pieces
alternate with love songs and weddin songs. The Jewish songs are in Farsi, an
ancient Iranian language, and in Azeri.
This music has its source in the
Mugam, already well known to western audiences. To be discovered ! To be enjoyed
!
