Rajery (Madagascar)

L
osing your hand when you're just 11 months old doesn't actually increase your chances of becoming a musician. Rajery, though, persevered and in the end he even became a master of the valiha, the Madagascan bamboo zither. And not only that: He also became an author, composer, warm-voiced singer, occasional harmonist and percussionist, a man of the theatre, founder of festivals, writer of musicals and creator of his own valiha school. He was even credited with the RFI "Decouvertes" Award 2002. The list could easily be carried on but it's hardly necessary. Just listen to the songs on his quartet's latest album - soft yet powerful, enchanting, almost hypnotic - and you'll see why they say in Madagascar, it takes two to love, three to dance and four to make a feast of music. So get ready for the banquet, and enjoy.
