| In
years gone by, no doubt Yasmin Levy would have been described as coming from "a
good family". Her father was a leading figure in the world of research into
and preservation of the Judeo-Spanish culture. Its language, Ladino, was a form
of 15th-century Spanish later embellished with Hebrew and other languages as the
Sephardim spread out to other Mediterranean countries. Ladino music now incorporates
sounds and rhythms from a wide rang, and Yasmin Levy's repertoire is correspondingly
varied, reflecting the extensive geo-cultural ground covered by the Ladino world.
Through her voice and spiritual awareness, she displays an extraordinary ability
to express the emotions embodied in this culture and from the way she sings you
can tell Yasmin Levy has, in her heart of hearts, visited the landscapes she so
vividly paints for our enjoyment.
