Bassekou Kouyate and his band Ngoni Ba won Album of the Year for Segu Blue in the 2008 BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music. The ngoni is a traditional Malian lute which dates back to the 13th century – putting four ngonis at the heart of their sound creates a groove so raw, so right and so addictive it has generated a whole new wave of interest in Malian music and their live show is a master class in understated power. |
